What does a voice gender detector actually detect?
A voice gender detector analyzes sound features that listeners often associate with a more masculine, feminine, or androgynous vocal impression. The most useful starting point is fundamental frequency, or F0: the rate at which the vocal folds repeat their vibration. We hear that repetition as the basic pitch of a voice.
Many lower-pitched adult speaking voices fall roughly around 85–180 Hz, while many higher-pitched adult speaking voices fall roughly around 165–255 Hz. These are broad population patterns, not rules. The ranges overlap, and a single person can move across a wide range depending on the sentence, emotion, language, health, or speaking style.
How the browser measures pitch
Our browser-based test records a short sample after you grant microphone access. It divides the sound into small frames and uses autocorrelation to look for repeating waveform patterns. Frames with a clearer repeating cycle provide more reliable pitch estimates. The detector then summarizes the sample with statistics such as the median and a binned mode so that one cough, pause, or unusually high syllable does not control the entire result.
The current test leans masculine below 160 Hz, feminine above 180 Hz, and androgynous in the overlap. Its confidence display reflects how far a sample sits from that overlap and how clearly pitch was detected. Confidence is about this measurement; it is not confidence about a person’s gender.
Pitch is important, but it is not the whole voice
People also notice resonance, formants, articulation, breathiness, loudness, rhythm, and intonation. Formants are resonant frequency bands shaped by the vocal tract. They can influence how large, bright, or dark a voice sounds even when two speakers use a similar pitch. The current version of our tool does not track formants, so stylized voices, some older voices, and samples outside its measurement range may receive less reliable labels.
This limitation is why a responsible voice analyzer should describe a vocal impression rather than claim to identify sex or gender. No pitch threshold can establish identity, and no short recording captures the full flexibility of a human voice.
Why the same voice can get different results
- Room noise and echo: fans, traffic, music, and reflections can hide the repeating pitch pattern.
- Microphone processing: phones and laptops apply different noise reduction and automatic gain.
- Speaking style: whispering, singing, vocal fry, character voices, and held vowels behave differently from natural speech.
- Physical state: fatigue, a cold, hydration, stress, and warm-up can alter pitch and tone.
- Sample length: a short or quiet sample gives the detector fewer useful frames.
How to make a voice gender test more consistent
Choose a quiet room, keep the device still, and stay about 15–25 cm from the microphone. Speak one natural sentence for three to five seconds at a comfortable volume. Avoid whispering, singing, deliberately raising or lowering your pitch, or holding a single vowel. For comparisons, keep the device, room, distance, and sentence the same and change only one factor at a time.
Try two or three recordings. A repeated pattern under similar conditions is more informative than one isolated percentage. Even then, treat the result as a snapshot of one sample—not a pass, fail, diagnosis, or identity label.
What about voice age detection?
Age impressions depend on more than pitch. Our voice age detector also considers broad measures of pitch variation, harmonicity, and spectral centroid. Harmonicity estimates how clearly periodic the waveform is, while spectral centroid provides a rough indication of brightness. Those features are combined into broad age-impression ranges, not an exact age.
Training, accent, health, recording quality, and individual variation can all outweigh age-related tendencies. A voice age result can support a playful “how old do I sound?” comparison, but it cannot determine a date of birth and should never be used for age verification.

Use voice testing for curiosity, practice, microphone comparisons, or an informal conversation starter. Do not use it for medical, hiring, identity, legal, safety, or discriminatory decisions. A voice is flexible, personal, and more complex than any three-way label.
